Have students view the natural flowers pictured below. Notice the shapes + placement of the petals + the details in the center of the flowers. Variations in vase shapes pictured.
4th grade oil pastel floral still life project
This is a simple floral still life lesson on oils pastels for 4th graders. Shadows + being aware of light sources in illustrations is introduced. Leave room for creative expression with colors and vase details. For a project variation, try different paper, leaves, change colors, or size.
1. various vase shapes
4. add horizontal line 4 table behind vase - about mid page
7. draw 2 oval petals top + bottom of all circles - rounded or pointed petals
10. optional - add leaves or drop a petal on table
13. continue 2 color flower center
16. color vase - one section at a time - use colors that have not yet been used in art piece - leave top, background uncolored
19. finished work - original vase details

2. draw oval in center of page w/blk oil pastel - this represents the top opening of the vase 5. draw 3 circles 4 flower centers - spaced
8. continue to add petals around the center circle
11. draw 2 stipes on vase body - circles can be added 4 details
14. color leaves - green variations
17. continue to add color on vase
20. finished work - with pointed petals

3. complete the vase shape - the vase should be symmetrical ( the same on both sides ) - students pick vase shape
6. add petals top + below circle - oval or pointed petals - try to keep all petals similar size + shape - petals need to be large + full for easy coloring
9. draw stems from each flower into the vase - note stems entrance to vase inside oval
12. color flower petals white, yellow or orange - stay clear of black lines
15. add color 2 table top- use a color that has not been used in the artwork as of yet

oil pastel floral still life lesson plan
objective
Students will make a simple, floral still life illustration using oil pastels. Artwork will include a vase, daisies, and the ground line. The artwork will include a background and a foreground. The vase will have a pattern illustrated in color on it's surface.
activity
- Show students examples of floral still life drawings created by various artists.
- Demonstrate how a shadow forms on the opposite side of the light source. (e.g. light source; upper-right = shadow; lower-left)
- Show students photos of daisy-like flowers with their leaves.
- See step-by-step examples given.
- Demonstrate the coloring process + where each color goes prior to students working on their projects. Give students an opportunity to choose colors.
materials
- oil pastels
- brown construction paper cut in approx. 9"x9" square
- optional; flower + vase samples displayed on tables
clean-up
- Class should stop approx. 5-10min. early for clean-up + putting supplies away.
- Assign helpers with specific tasks.
- Oil pastels can get in carpet, so notify accordingly.

- Balance - Visual equilibrium in a composition; achieved by organizing the weight and attention of all elements in an artwork. Types of balance are symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial, and crystallographic.
- Color - The visual sensation dependent on the reflection or absorption of light from a given surface. The three characteristics of color are hue, value. and intensity. Color Harmony; The use of compatible colors to help unify a composition.
- Contour Drawings - The drawing of an object as though the drawing tool is moving along the edges and ridges of the form.
- Geometrical - Objects, lines, or shapes based on mathematical concepts, such as the circle, square, or rectangle.
- Shape - A two-dimensional are or plane that may be open or closed, free-form or geometric. It can be found in nature or is made by humans.
- Space - An area in which objects or images can exist.
- Still Life - Arrangement or work of art showing a collection of inanimate objects.
- Unity - Compositional similarity, oneness, togetherness, or cohesion. Total visual effect in a composition achieved by the careful blending of elements of art and principles of design

- Complete illustration using different flowers (e.g.tulips, roses), or add a flower on the table, or fallen leaves on the table.
