Artists organize these words, or elements, using the principles of design. Elements of Art + Principles of Design are the vocabulary of a used to express ideas. The principles of design involve the ways in which elements of art are arranged (balance, contrast, dominance, emphasis, movement, repetition, rhythm, subordination, variation, unity). The principles pictured are those used in the California State Visual Arts Standards.
balanceThe way in which the elements in visual arts are arranged to create a feeling of equilibrium in a work of art. The three types of balance are, symmetry, asymmetry, + radial.
