examples of geometric shapes + cool colors
Geometric shapes pertain to geometry. Geometric shapes are made using mathematical equations so they are more precise + perfect, unlike organic shapes which are imperfect. Geometric shapes are those made with tools, not free-hand. There are some examples of these shapes below.
Cool colors are next to each other on the color wheel. They are blues, greens + violets. Mix black with a color to get a shade of that color.
This page contains an art project using cool colors for elementary children. I have done this cool color + geometric shape lesson with 1st graders.

cool colors + geometric shapes art lesson
Students will, successfully make a painting of geometric shapes, cool colors, + shades. They will gain knowledge about what a geometric shape is, which are cool colors, + how to make a shade of a color.

activity
1. Show students examples of pictures using cool colors + examples geometric shapes.
2. Demonstrate painting large enough for all students in class to see details.
4. See example pictures for demonstration of drawing + painting steps.
5. Use only cool colors (blues, greens, purples).
6. Mix black with any cool color to get a shade of that color.

clean-up
- Class should stop approx. 15min. early for clean-up + putting supplies away.
- Assign a designated area for project to be placed for drying. Drying time, approx. 20 min.
- Assign tasks for student helpers.
- If available, use a large trash bag to help with clean-up.
vocabulary words
- color - The visual sensation dependent on the reflection or absorption of light from a given surface. The three characteristics of color are hue, value, and intensity.
- composition - The organization of elements in a work of art.
- cool colors - Colors suggesting coolness: blue, green, + purple.
- elements of art - sensory components used to create works of art: line, color, shape/form, texture, value, space.
- geometric - Refers to shapes or forms pertaining to geometry.
- harmony - The principle of design that combines elements in a work of art to emphasize the similarities of separate but related parts.
- line - A point moving in space. Line can vary in width, length, curvature, color, or direction.
- Organic - Refers to shapes or forms having irregular edges or to surfaces or objects resembling things existing in nature.
- pattern - Anything repeated in a predictable combination.
- shade - Color darkened with black added.
- Shape - A two-dimensional are or plane that may be open or closed, free-form or geometric. It can be found in nature or is made by humans.
- Space - An area in which objects or images can exist.
- texture - The surface quality of materials either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). It is one of the elements of art.
- Unity - Compositional similarity, oneness, togetherness, or cohesion. Total visual effect in a composition achieved by the careful blending of elements of art and principles of design.
- variety - A principle of art concerned with combining one or more elements of art in different ways to create interest.
- warm colors - Colors suggesting warmth: red, yellow, and orange.
variation
- use colored paper instead of paint
- use watercolor paints, crayons, or oil pastels or a combination
- cut out of magazines cool colored images, cut into geometric shapes
- have students write about their art
