Perspective is so cool - Don'y quite know why but I love to paint, sketch, draw images of pears!
1st - my rationale - "I love art - art is intuitive "Ms Bella
Art is different from other subjects taught unschool, but it is an important one. For some students it can be an outlet, a way to make sense of things, a way to communicate, + a form of self expression. Visual culture should be added but, I do not think that the art-making part of Art Education should be eliminated.
I think that art is more than the perfect, pretty painting hanging in a museum. I agree with some ideas of visual culture. For one, the idea that ordinary, everyday objects designed by man are all forms of art + that there is a design process which goes into creating an amusement park, a building, a garden, + a shopping mall. I like to expose many different art styles, mediums, + ideas to my students + let them make their own decisions as to why they consider art or not. They do not have to agree with me. Culture + historical meanings are important background information to add to a students' design skills + process. Studying the history of art helps students to understand how some art works or art techniques evolved or are important.
Everyone learns differently, some learn by reading, others by watching or listening, + others by doing so having various ways to teach art is beneficial. The computer + museums are good tools to add to the Art Curriculum, but they will never take the place of the actual feel of clay, the smell of paint, or the magic when 2 primary colors mixed together create a 3rd, new color right before your eyes. These are important parts of the art-making experience. Working hands-on with these materials helps students to learn, 1st hand,
how an artist thinks + works. When students use different mediums + make decisions in their art, it helps them in making decisions in life + live with those decisions.
We are very visual + sometimes influenced by visual things around us. I think that Visual Culture should be integrated into the Art Education Program, but not take the place of making art. The standards re good to strengthen teaching or facilitating + they help art educators communicate + relate to colleagues. Art should not just become another academic subject. Students need to experience the art-making process, read about it, talk, + critique art.

...a credit to my art facilitating skills
-I have bumped into past students from time to time. They have huge smiles when they see me outside of the art room where they learned about art. The fact that they said something to me, means an awful lot.
-I have changed the lives, forever of MANY of my students, many I know of + many I do not. I was speaking with a substitute teacher at my Public school. Her daughter had decided to major in Graphic Design in college BECAUSE of her art teacher. After discussion, we realized it was with ME! At my very 1st year at the school. Her daughter only had 8 art classes with me when she was in the 5th grade. I said to myself, "Wow!", then "YAY!", my past student loves art as much as I do, I guess what ever it is I do, made a difference. I'ver had students say to me, "...You made me love art again:)". How sad, that such a young child, did not like creating, no matter what it is. This makes e smile. I'm not just going to a job everyday, what I do is making a difference.
- I was in a deli one night for a bite. This you man walked up to my table. "You were my art teacher. In 5th grade." He wanted to tell me he as published!. He was a fabulously amazing artist, even at such a young age. He created very advance cartoon figures with near perfect muscular illustrations. Way beyond his age level. I allowed him a lot of leeway creating his own artwork instead of doing the class assignment, encouraged his art. I remember telling him to create a personality for each of his images, to make story boards, + that he was not too young to get published. He heard me, + did it! The best gift I could get was to hear how successful he was. Good for him!!!
- I was at the gym + 3 teenage girls noticed me + said " You were my art teacher, Ms Bella:)" I barley recognized them, young , beautiful women, with makeup! Seeing my after a workout, hair up, etc., but they recognized me!
-I can 'run into' students anywhere. I had a summer job and 2 boys were there with their Mom and ran over to me with hug smiles "Hello Ms Bella!" I introduced myself to their Mom, who had no idea who her boys were with!
...Waiting on line at the movies, a student asked what was I doing there? Many times they are very surprised to see me outside the art-room. Maybe they think I live there? HaHaHa. Something similar happened at the mall. The confused look is always from the very young students.

student comments
...+ yes, there's more - maybe some of your questions are answered here...or you can send me your question
So, Ms. Bella,
When did you start making art?
"A memory of mine is in kindergarten, my 1st school experience. I never went to preschool, didn't like it. My Mom tried sending me but no, I didn't want to be there. NOT AT ALL! So she took me out! Oh, so back to the question. In kindergarten, my teacher held up MY artwork to show the class a good example. She did that quite often. The class participated in an art contest on bicycle safety. Yes, I won! I remember my drawing. It was a child holding onto the back of a truck + let the truck pull the driver + the bicycle. That was a no, no!"
Ms. Bella,
Do you ever get tired of being around art + art materials?
"That's a no, a most definite no. I LUV being around art , artists + art materials."
Ms.Bella,
Why did you start working with children + facilitating art?
"I tried graphic art, Art Directing, Faux Painting, Clothing Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Environmental Design, Construction, to name a few. Yes, all were art related. It was something I wanted to try. I have had various art-related 'careers' + this was one that lasted the longest + was the most rewarding. Young people are real, they understand me, + they are to the point or some might say blunt. I like their honesty. One goal was to have an entire generation where no one EVER said. "I can't draw a straight line." My answered to that is, + was always, you don't need to, we have tools to do that. It's part of technical drawing or graphic design. Let the computers + tools help you draw a straight line, you can simply, draw a line."
Ms. Bella's answer to a student...
Many times a student ays to me, "Ms. Bella, When I grow up, I want to be an artist!" My answer to them is always, "You already are! The 1st time you wrote your name was an original piece of art. No one can write your name EXACTLY like you can."
