elements of art
art is a language
Elements of Art + Principles of Design are the vocabulary of an artist used to express ideas. The elements of art are the sensory components used to create works of art: line, color, shape, form, texture, value, space. The elements pictured are those used in the California State Visual Arts Standards.
color....The visual sensation dependent on the reflection or absorption of light from a given surface. The three characteristics of color are hue, value, + intensity.
line....A point moving in space. Line can vary in width, length, curvature, color, or direction.
space....The emptiness or area between, around, above, below, or contained within the object. Shapes + forms are defined by the space around + within them, just as spaces are defined by the shapes + forms around + within them.

shape....A two-dimensional area or plane that may be opened or closed, free-form or geometric. It can be found in nature or is made by humans.
texture....The surface quality of materials, either actual (tactile) or implied (visual).
value....Lightness or darkness of a hue or neutral color. A value scale shows the range values from black to white.

form
A 3-dimensional volume or the illusion of 3-dimensions (related to shape, which is 2-dimensional); the particular characteristics of the visual elements of a work of art (as distinguished from its subject matter or content).
