Face abstract art project
This is an art lesson on mixed media marker portraits for children. The abstract portrait simply drawn using water based markers with water added for effect. Tissue paper also is glued for a mixed media project. It is geared to accommodate 1st graders, but can easily be adjusted to other grade levels. Enjoy!

objective
Students will, successfully make an art work of an abstract face using simple, basic shapes + lines. They will gain knowledge of putting simple, basic shapes or lines, like squares, rectangles, triangles + straight lines to create a picture. They will learn about waterbed markers + the reaction that when water is added to marker lines. As well as how to add texture to a drawing to create a mixed media piece.
materials
- 9"x12" where watercolor paper
- water based markers
- watercolor brushes - small size
- cups for water
- glue
- tissue paper - light colors preferred
instructions
- explain to students that they will illustrate a bust of a girl or a boy using waterbed markers
- follow step-by-step instructions above to complete art project
- surprise them with the addition of water painted on the markers
- explain how to properly care for + proper use of brushes
- dip brush in water when read
- leave ample time for clean-up
- give younger students jobs for clean-up

- Still Life - Arrangement or work of art showing a collection of inanimate objects.
- texture - The surface quality of materials either actual (tactile) or implied (visual). It is one of the elements of art.
- Unity - Compositional similarity, oneness, togetherness, or cohesion. Total visual effect in a composition achieved by the careful blending of elements of art and principles of design.
- variety - A principle of art concerned with combining one or more elements of art in different ways to create interest.
- value - The lightness or darkness of a hue or neutral color. A value scale shows the range of values from black to white.
