 This is an art lesson on self portraits for children.  The self portrait is a collage of cut, construction paper. It is geared to accommodate 1st graders, but can easily be adjusted to other grade levels.  Multicultural paper colors are used.

Cut paper self portrait lesson contains:
  1. definition of self portrait

  3. step-by-step instructions with pictures of the project
  4. a lesson plan (including California State Visual Art Standards)

collage self portrait art lesson

objective

Students will, successfully make a paper collage self portrait. They will gain knowledge about what a self portrait is and how to manipulate construction paper to form a human face.

materials

construction paper  - multicultural colors
scissors
liquid glue
pencils

activity

1.  Show students examples of self portraits.
 2.  Demonstrate  large enough for all students in class to see details.
 4.  See step-by-step example pictures for demonstration of cutting + glueing above. 
5.  Explain to students the difference between self portraits a portraits.   
 6.  Students should express the value of craftsmanship in their artworks.
7. Glue should not show. Artwork should look like it was glued by magic.  Apply glue in small dots or drips.
8. Demonstrate cutting shapes + where each shape goes prior to students working on their projects.

vocabulary words

collage - an artistic composition made of various materials (e.g., paper, cloth, or wood) glued on a surface.
harmony - the principle of design that combines elements in a work of art to emphasize the similarities of separate but related parts.
self-portrait - a pictorial or literary portrait of oneself, created by oneself.

value - lightness or darkness of a hue or neutral color. A value scale shows the reange of values from black to white.

VARIATION

- use a variation of non-realistic colored paper
​- get creative + geometric with all features + pieces of paper
